Congratulations on your new home! Moving in marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter – but before you start arranging furniture or unpacking boxes, there are a few important tasks to take care of that will give you peace of mind and set you up for success.

  1. Change the Locks

You never know how many copies of your house key might still be floating around – from previous owners to dog walkers or contractors. One of the first steps you should take is changing all the exterior locks or rekeying them. This small investment ensures that you, and only you, have access to your new home.

  1. Change the Toilet Seats

While it may not be glamorous, swapping out the toilet seats is a quick and easy way to add a layer of cleanliness and comfort. It’s also a great time to upgrade to a more modern or comfortable style, if you prefer.

  1. Update the Garage Door Code

If your new home has an electronic garage door keypad, be sure to reset the code. You never know who might still have access to the original one, and updating it only takes a few minutes.

  1. Check Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Safety first! Test all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace the batteries, even if they seem fine. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

  1. Locate Your Main Shut-Off Valves and Circuit Breaker

Take a few minutes to find your water shut-off valve, gas shut-off, and circuit breaker box. You’ll be glad you know where they are in case of an emergency.

  1. Change Air Filters and Schedule HVAC Maintenance

A clean air filter improves air quality and system efficiency. If the previous owner didn’t leave a record of the last HVAC service, it’s smart to schedule a maintenance check to start with a clean slate.

  1. Deep Clean or Schedule a Cleaning Service

Even if your home looks spotless, a thorough deep clean helps remove allergens, bacteria, and dust left behind. Focus on carpets, cabinets, bathrooms, and any appliances that came with the home.

  1. Update Your Address

Be sure to change your address with the USPS, update your driver’s license, and notify your bank, employer, and any subscriptions of your new address.

  1. Secure Important Documents

Store closing documents, warranties, and manuals for appliances in a safe, accessible spot. You’ll thank yourself later when you need them.

  1. Introduce Yourself to the Neighbors

Taking the time to say hello goes a long way. Neighbors can be a great source of local information, and you’re more likely to enjoy your new community when you feel connected.

The boxes can wait… taking care of these essentials first will help you feel secure and truly settled in your new space. Welcome home!
