When you think of Thanksgiving, perhaps you envision a long table surrounded by extended family and a variety of dishes to try. Candles are lit, the table is beautifully decorated, and the turkey is glistening with butter, tanned golden brown and just waiting to be carved.

While this may sound exciting, the reality of hosting extended family can sometimes look more like the McCallister household before their trip to Paris in Home Alone. Kids are bickering, drinks are spilling, adults are arguing, and everyone seems to be talking over one another. If you've never seen the movie, let's just say it was pure chaos.

With this in mind, there's a case to be made for hosting a smaller Thanksgiving. As you think about your plans this holiday season, consider whether a gathering with just a few of your favorite people might be more your speed this year.

### **Less Stress, More Enjoyment**

Hosting a smaller Thanksgiving means fewer dishes to prepare, fewer people to accommodate and, ultimately, less pressure to make everything perfect. Instead of spending days planning an elaborate menu and worrying about whether everyone will enjoy themselves, you can focus on creating a celebration that works for you.

A smaller guest list also gives you more freedom to cook and decorate however you'd like. Maybe that means skipping the traditional turkey in favor of a family-favorite meal or keeping the decorations simple with a few festive touches. You can stick to the dishes everyone loves without feeling obligated to prepare a dozen different sides.

And with fewer people around the table, there's less cleanup waiting for you when the meal is over. That alone could be something to be thankful for!

### **Celebrate on Your Own Terms**

One of the greatest perks of a smaller Thanksgiving is the flexibility it offers. Rather than coordinating schedules with a large group of relatives or traveling from one gathering to another, you can enjoy the holiday at your own pace.

Want to eat Thanksgiving dinner at noon? Go for it. Prefer to stay in your pajamas until the afternoon? Nobody's stopping you. Want to spend the day watching your football team, putting up Christmas decorations or enjoying a holiday movie marathon? The choice is yours.

Hosting a smaller gathering in the comfort of your own home allows you to create traditions that reflect what matters most to you and your loved ones. Whether you're celebrating with your immediate family, a few close friends or just your significant other, there's no rule saying Thanksgiving has to be a big production to be memorable.

### **Make Room for Meaningful Moments**

Large family gatherings can be wonderful opportunities to reconnect, but they can also make it difficult to spend quality time with everyone. Between preparing food, entertaining guests and making small talk, the day can pass before you've had a chance to enjoy a meaningful conversation.

With a smaller group, there's more room for those moments. You might find yourself sharing stories around the dinner table, reminiscing about favorite holiday memories or simply enjoying each other's company without the distractions of a crowded house.

A more intimate celebration can also make it easier to slow down and appreciate the little things – whether that's cooking together, playing a board game, or sharing what you're thankful for this year.

After all, Thanksgiving isn't about how many chairs you can fit around the table. It's about the people sitting in them.

### **Focus on What Really Matters**

It's easy to get caught up in the expectations surrounding the holidays. Between elaborate meals, picture-perfect decorations and packed schedules, Thanksgiving can sometimes feel more like a checklist than a celebration.

Choosing to keep things small doesn't mean you're missing out. In fact, it might give you more opportunities to enjoy what the holiday is really about: gratitude, connection and spending time with the people who make life special.

Whether you're hosting two people or 20, the most important part of Thanksgiving isn't the size of your gathering. It's making memories, appreciating what you have and feeling at home with the people you love.

And who knows? A smaller Thanksgiving might just become your new favorite holiday tradition.
