As Independence Day approaches, many of us are getting ready to celebrate with red, white, and blue outfits, backyard barbecues, and dazzling fireworks displays. Fireworks and the 4th of July go hand in hand. Seeing the colors and sparkles in the sky makes it feel like summer. However, something exciting and fun can quickly become dangerous if the proper precautions are not taken.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there were roughly 800 emergency department-treated injuries associated with firecrackers, and 700 with sparklers in 2023.
If you plan on putting on your very own fireworks show in your backyard to celebrate this holiday, be sure to follow the steps below to protect yourself, your loved ones, your pets, and your home.
Don’t get too close to fireworks. Make sure you watch from at least 500 feet away. Fireworks are also very loud, which can be dangerous to the health of your hearing – especially for children. Consider using earplugs or headphones.
If you’re lighting fireworks and one is a dud, do not relight it. Wait at least 20 minutes before handling it, then douse it with water. Also, only light one firework at a time. This makes it easier to control the situation and reduces the risk of accidents.
Keep pets indoors. Many pets get lost and run away on the 4th of July because they are scared of the loud fireworks. Also, don’t allow children to light fireworks – even sparklers. According to the CPSC, sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which is hot enough to melt some metals. Instead, consider glow sticks for children.
During the show, make sure to have a bucket of water or a garden hose ready to go. This way, you will be prepared should any fires get out of hand. After the show, make sure you soak the fireworks with water before disposing of them.
These are just some tips that can prevent accidents on Independence Day. However, make sure to do your own research and learn even more ways to stay safe before you start your fireworks show.
