As the new year approaches, many people are surely starting to draft their new year’s resolutions. Maybe your new year’s resolutions have to do with eating healthier or being more active. But what about your house’s new year’s resolutions?

If your house could speak, what do you think it would tell you? Is it craving its siding power washed? A fresh coat of interior paint? Some new shrubs outside?

If you’re anything like me, you’ve always got a running list of house projects that you’d like to complete. You know what they say… “If you’ve got a house, you’ve got a hobby.” However, it’s almost impossible to get all the projects you’re thinking of accomplishing done at once. That’s where you need to prioritize. Those projects that you think will really improve the function of your day-to-day? Put those at the top of your list. Anything that has a practical use that will improve your current routines should be prioritized. The projects on your list only for cosmetic purposes can wait.

Be realistic with your goals. Pick a few projects that can be done on a few weekends throughout the year and one larger project that you are confident you could finish by the beginning of next year.

• Save a certain amount of money each month for your emergency fund.
