While fireworks are a staple of Independence Day, they can be traumatizing for our furry friends – including dogs, cats, horses, birds, and more. While specific percentages vary, it is generally accepted that up to 50% of dogs are afraid of fireworks, according to a study from the Veterinary Nursing Journal. In fact, The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals reported that one-in-five lost pets go missing after being scared by loud noises, such as fireworks.
All animals, not just dogs, can be negatively affected by fireworks. The loud noises can initiate a fight-or-flight response in animals. In addition, some animals are simply predisposed to fear and anxiety. For example, pets who have separation anxiety from their owners are more likely to display anxiousness when fireworks go off. Also, certain dog breeds, including Bichon Frise, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and Border Collie are innately more susceptible to anxiety. Animals who are older are also more likely to experience anxiety from loud noises since they are already in a more vulnerable position.
Just like in humans, anxiety can manifest in many different forms for pets. However, if you notice your pet displaying any of the behaviors below, they may be experiencing anxiety, whether from the loud boom of fireworks, or other factors at play.
Common signs of anxiety for animals include pacing, trembling, excess vocalization (barking, meowing, whining), panting, drooling, changes in appetite or sleeping patterns, hiding, and aggression, according to the American Kennel Club.
Have a happy Independence Day and keep an extra eye on pets who may be afraid of fireworks.
