Keep your home comfortable without breaking the bank – or the planet.
When the summer heat kicks in, it’s tempting to crank up the air conditioning. But running your A/C around the clock can lead to skyrocketing energy bills and can strain your HVAC system. Fortunately, there are smart and sustainable ways to keep your home cool without overworking your budget or the environment.
Here are some energy-saving tips to help you stay comfortable during summer’s hottest months:
1. Use Your Windows Wisely
During the day, keep blinds or curtains closed to block out the sun’s rays – especially on south- and west-facing windows. In the evening, open windows to let in cooler air. Also consider installing thermal or blackout curtains for even better insulation.
During the summer months, 76% of sunlight that falls on standard double-pane windows enters to become heat, as reported by the U.S. Department of Energy.
2. Install a Programmable Thermostat
A programmable or smart thermostat lets you control your home’s temperature more efficiently. Set it to increase the temperature of your home while you’re away or sleeping and cool things down before you get home. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save as much as 10% a year on heating and cooling when you utilize a smart thermostat.
3. Run Ceiling Fans Strategically
Fans don’t lower a room’s temperature; however, they help your body feel cooler by circulating air. Set ceiling fans to rotate counterclockwise in summer to push cool air down. Also remember to turn fans off when you leave the room.
4. Seal Leaks and Insulate
Poor insulation and air leaks in your home forces your A/C to work harder. Seal cracks around windows and doors and consider adding insulation to your attic or walls to reduce energy loss.
5. Cook Smart
Using the oven or stove can heat up your home fast. Opt for microwave meals, use a slow cooker, or grill outdoors to help keep the kitchen cool. Better yet, enjoy refreshing no-cook summer recipes like salads or smoothies.
6. Switch to LED Bulbs
Incandescent light bulbs can produce a surprising amount of heat. Replace them with LED light bulbs, which not only stay cooler, but also use less electricity.
7. Use Energy-Efficient Appliances
Older appliances tend to use more energy and generate more heat than newer appliances. Upgrade to ENERGY STAR® rated appliances to save energy and reduce indoor heat.
8. Consider Shade and Landscaping
Planting trees or installing exterior shading, such as awnings or pergolas, can naturally cool down your home by blocking direct sunlight. As a bonus, it boosts curb appeal too!
