Celebrate Earth Day: Eco-Friendly Upgrades That Make a Difference

Earth Day. A day where Kermit the Frog’s “It isn’t easy being green” takes on a whole new meaning. While being green isn’t always easy, there are simple steps you can take at home that truly make a difference.

Earth Day is a great opportunity to not only look around and appreciate the planet we live on, but also to reflect on how your everyday habits impact it. Are they helping or hurting?

Here are a few easy ways to start living a little greener right at home.

Challenge Yourself to a Zero-Waste Day

When you stop and think about how much trash you produce in a single day, it can be eye-opening. The average American generates about 4.9 pounds of waste per day, which adds up to nearly 1,800 pounds per year, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

That’s a lot of waste. And, what isn’t recycled ends up in landfills, where items like plastic can take hundreds of years to decompose.

Try challenging yourself to a zero-waste day:

  • Use reusable bags, bottles, and containers
  • Avoid single-use plastics
  • Compost food scraps when possible

Even one mindful day can help build habits that stick.

Install a Smart Thermostat

A smart thermostat, like the Google Nest Thermostat, can make your home more energy-efficient without sacrificing comfort.

By automatically adjusting temperatures when you’re away or asleep, smart thermostats can help reduce energy use. In fact, studies show they can save homeowners around 10–15% on heating and cooling costs, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

It’s a small upgrade that can make a noticeable impact on both your utility bill and your carbon footprint.

Remove Invasive Species

Take a look around your yard or garden. Are invasive plants taking over?

Species like English ivy or Japanese honeysuckle can crowd out native plants and disrupt local ecosystems. By removing invasive species, you create space for native plants like milkweed or black-eyed Susans to thrive.

Why does that matter? Native plants support local wildlife, including pollinators like bees and butterflies, which are essential for a healthy ecosystem, according to the National Wildlife Federation.

Conserve Water

It’s easy to take water for granted, but it’s one of our most valuable (and limited) resources.

Simple changes can make a big difference:

  • Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth
  • Fix leaks promptly
  • Run full loads in your dishwasher and washing machine

In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports using a dishwasher instead of handwashing dishes can use up to 3–4 times less water, especially with energy-efficient models.

And when it comes to energy, remember: many of Earth’s resources are finite. Fossil fuels, for example, are non-renewable and will eventually be depleted if consumption continues at current rates, as reported by the International Energy Agency.

Small Changes Add Up

Whether you choose to try just one of these ideas or make several eco-friendly upgrades, every effort counts. Sustainability doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. Small, consistent changes can lead to a big impact over time.
